State Pollution Control Board Chairman gets relief from the HC

Of late the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had issued an advisory to all the states governments that the Chairman appointee of the State Pollution Control Boards (PCBs) needs be a person who is well versed with all the aspects of environmental sciences. In line with this the states were asked to formulate a policy document for the appointment of the Chairman of the PCB according to the given guide lines. Since the state did not comply with these guide lines the term of the present Chairman Mr Kuldeep Pathania was suspect and was to be terminated as directed by the NGT. It is to be noted that, mostly, in all the states, this post has been essentially a political post. The High Court’s ruling on Thursday came as a relief to Mr Pathania as the Court instructed the state government to formulate the policies as per the instruction of the NGT and permitted Mr Pathania to continue in office till such time that these policies were drafted. Mr Kuldeep Pathani has been an MLA in the Congress government from 1985 to 1990 and then again from 1993 to 1998 and was also awarded the best parliamentarian award
