International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was celebrated today at Indira Gandhi Medical College Shimla. Skit and quiz competitions and other activities were presented by the students of Psychology and MBBS of the college to mark the occasion. The slogan of the United Nations for this day was ‘Listen first- Listening to children and youth is the first step to help them grow healthy and safe.’
Presiding over the function Prof. and Head of Psychiatry Department of IGMC Dr. Ravi Sharma said that increasing trends of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was a threat to our society and also affecting youths to a large extent. He said that concerted efforts are required to check this social evil. He stressed on leading a healthy lifestyle i.e. balanced diet, yoga, pranayam, meditation, morning walk etc. by medical students to be better Doctors in future.
He emphasized on the need of early intervention for drug related problems and also shared his experiences as the Head of the Department of Psychiatry. He spoke about the importance of leading a drug free life and emphasized the problems of drug abuse among students. He distributed the prizes to the winners of quiz competition.
Dr. Dinesh Dutt Sharma, Associate Prof. of Psychiatry Department stressed on the preventive strategies targeting on school and college children to prevent drug abuse. He also stressed on various drugs rehabilitation intervention.
Dr. Anubhuti Singh welcomed the Chief Guest and Dr. Kriti Sharma present the vote of thanks.
Dr. Sanjay Sood, Prof. Ashwani Sood, Dr. Ram Lal, Dr. Kaushik, other officers and students in large number were present among others on this occasion.
