Governor inaugurates International Lavi Fair


Rampur – Himachal Governor Urmila Singh inaugurated the four-day long International Lavi fair at Rampur in district Shimla today. Speaking on the occasion, Governor Urmila Singh said that Lavi fair was a unique example of the glorious, social, cultural, economic and historical legacy of Himachal Pradesh. It was one of the oldest fairs, famous for promoting trade and other commercial activities within the State and also with Tibet since centuries, she added. The Governor lauded the efforts of the organizers for making sincere efforts to carry forward the rich traditions of the fair and added that woollens, dry fruits and other traditional crafts and products exhibited in the market were unique and the fair provided a good opportunity for their promotion and sale besides benefitting the traditional craftsmen and farmers.She said that fairs and festivals played an important role in preserving the rich cultural heritage of the State and added that every effort should be made to preserve the cultural heritage and to restore the old glory of traditional fairs and festivals as they were symbols of rich culture of the State. Lauding the scenic beauty of district Shimla, the Governor said that in order to preserve the natural beauty, people should be made aware about environment protection and beauty of hills should be protected at all costs. She stressed upon tree plantation and protecting the existing green cover. Governor also inaugurated the ‘Kinnauri market’ and exhibition put up by various government departments and other organizations on the occasion and evinced keen interest in the exhibits.Speaking on the occasion, Nand Lal, Chief Parliamentary Secretary said that efforts were being made to carry out developmental activities in the area so that people could be benefitted and they could get all basic facilities at their doorstep. He said that Lavi fair had historical significance as well as promoted commercial activities since centuries till present times. D K Rattan, ADM (Law and Order) Shimla welcomed the Governor. A colourful cultural programme was also presented on the occasion.
