Theatre, television and film actor Tom Alter has been diagnosed with cancer. The news was confirmed by his son Jamie Alter days after Tom was discharged from a Mumbai hospital.
The Indian Express reports that Jamie confirmed that his father, aged 67, is suffering from stage four skin cancer. Huffpost reports that Tom fell sick a year ago when he did not turn up for his play based on singer KL Saigal.
The same report states that the film he was planning to direct has been indefinitely put on hold and a promotional event of his upcoming show was also cancelled recently.
Last week, Alter was admitted into a city hospital as he complained of “body pain”, as reported by The Indian Express. While that led to speculations of Tom suffering from a terminal disease, his longtime collaborator and playwright Sayeed Alam rubbished the rumours.
However, now Tom’s son has confirmed this news. Tom was last seen in Vijay Verma and Imran Khan’s travel drama Sargoshiyan earlier this year. He is best known for his stint in theatre and for playing Shaktiman’s mentor in the popular children’s television show.
He received a Padma Shri in 2008 for his contributions in the fields of arts and cinema.
