Former local MLA and member of the state BJP Working Committee Rakesh Pathania has appealed to Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh to grant district status to Nurpur, the oldest subdivision of the state, as it was a long-standing demand of the people of the area. Addressing a press conference in the Press Club building, at Nurpur, on Wednesday, Pathania pointed out that the Virbhadra Singh government was in the process of declaring new districts and the Chief Minister was likely to declare Rampur, Palampur and Sundernagar as the new districts on Independence Day in Rampur. He said as per sources the government machinery was working out on the proposal.“If Nurpur is not made a district by the Chief Minister, the people of Nurpur subdivision will come on to the streets and launch a mass agitation. The Congress leaders and local MLA Ajay Mahajan will not be allowed to enter the area and “go back” slogans will welcome them,” he warned. Lashing out at Mahajan, Pathania said he had failed to protect the interests of Nurpur in the past four and half years as the Virbhadra government had declared Fatehpur and Indora as the two new subdivisions this year and the MLA had remained a mute spectator. “Mahajan had made hollow promise of granting district status to Nurpur before the last Assembly elections held in December 2012. His apathy and mysterious silence on the issue has angered the people of the area,” he asserted.
