The two days National Conference on “Implications of Climate change on Himalayan Environment” being organised jointly by School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, CUHP and Wadia institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehra Dun was inaugurated By Prof. Timothy A. Gonsalves, Director, IIT Mandi and presided by Prof. Furqan Qamar, Vice -Chancellor, CUHP at Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Temporary Academic Block, Shahpur. Chief Guest of the function, Prof Timothy highlighted the role of developing infrastructural facilities and disruptive technology on climate change. He said, “Global warming can be avoided by using multidisciplinary approach for sustainable development by reaching at innovative solution. New media technologies can play a better role to make people aware about environmental degradation”. He emphasized that we have to live with it and stressed the need to work in collaboration with scientist, technologist, sociologist and economist to deal with the changing climate. He also highlighted the minus and plus points of green revolution, mobile phones and increasing infrastructural facilities leading to climate change. Prof Furqan Qamar, Vice- Chancellor said that to save the human race from the disaster there is a pressing need for an interactive discussion on all the platforms. Pro Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Yoginder S. Verma while welcoming the guests highlighted the importance of theme of climate change in the present changing climate. Prof. V.C. Tewari, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology mentioned different proxies of paleo-climate and mentioned the changes with geological time scale. Prof A.K. Mahajan. Chairman, ICHE-14 and Dean, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences stressed the importance of climate change in Himalayan region and mentioned latest facilities available in the department for dealing with these phenomenon. Forty scientist, academicians and students are participating in this two days conference from JNU, WIHG, BSIP, NIH, CU Jammu, Garhwal University and India Mariology Department, Chandigarh to discuss various issues related to paleoclimate and recent climate changes. Prof A.K. Attir, JNU, Dr V.C. Thakur, Ex Director, WIHG, Dr J.C. Kuniyal GBPIEH, Deans and Heads of the different departments, faculty members, research scholars and students of the university were present in the inaugural function.
