College violence returns to Kolkata, cop dead

12 February Kolkata: A police Sub-Inspector was killed and four students were seriously injured when fierce clashes took place between the Trinamool Congress workers and the supporters of Congress party during nominations for students’ union election in a local college here on Tuesday.

According to reports, the clashes took place inside the Harimohan Ghose College campus when student leaders from both sides were filing their nominations, which was initially peaceful.

Though exact reason for the violent clashes is yet to be ascertained, it is believed that some local goons first started making anti-government slogans prompting the TMC workers to retaliate.

During the skirmishes, several rounds of bullets were fired by some unknown miscreants, despite heavy police presence inside the campus.

The ensuing firing and stone-pelting from the two sides resulted in the death of a police official, who was trying to pacify the situation.

Four students also sustained serious injuries during the clashes between the TMC and Congress workers.

Today being the last day for filing nomination, there was a lot of rush and hectic activities inside the college today. A large number of policemen were also deployed to avoid any untoward incident during nominations. After the incident, a battalion of Rapid Action Force has been deployed in and around the college and the situation is being closely monitored by the Kolkata administration and the state government.

A case has also been registered in connection with the violent clashes and the police have begun investigating the matter.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is said to have directed the city police officials to bring the situation under control and brief her about the situation.

She has also directed the local TMC MP Javed Hakim to take stock of the situation.

Meanwhile, a blame game has also begun between the two political parties for the Harimohan College clashes.

Trinamool Congress has blamed local goons for the unfortunate incident and said that it can’t hold the students responsible for the clashes.
